Frequently Asked Questions
What is Maui Math Circle?
Maui Math Circle's mission is to help students develop problem solving skills and expand their knowledge of mathematics. MMC is not a tutoring or test preparation program. Our goal is to foster an appreciation for mathematics.
Why do we have to register?
Maui Math Circle makes strong use of electronic communications such as email, so we need to know how to communicate with you. We also have many individuals who participate in different ways; planning for such a large group would be unmanageable without registration.
What is the age range of students who may participate in MMC?
Students must be in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade.
Is there an admissions or qualifying exam?
No. We welcome all students enrolled in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade.
My student can't come to math circle every month. Can he/she still attend?
Yes! Each registration form reserves a spot for one session. Before each session, you must register your son/daughter to reserve a seat. If your child will not be attending a session, you do not need to fill out a registration form.
How much does MMC cost? Is there a fee?
There is no fee for participating in the Maui Math Circle.
What does my child need to bring to a MMC meeting?
Please bring pencils, erasers, and a water bottle. If your child has attended previous sessions this year, it is recommended that he/she also bring his/her Math Circle binder. No calculators are needed.
Who teaches at MMC?
The MMC staff is composed of middle and high school students with math competition experience.
How can parents get involved in helping the MMC?
Parents can help in many ways from providing snacks during the breaks to helping with the overall organization to donating to the circle. For more information on how parents can help, please contact us at [email protected].
Do parents have to accompany their child during the session?
Parents may sign in their child at 1:45 p.m. and pick him/her up at 4:00 p.m. Parents are welcome to stay the whole session; however, there may not be space for them to sit.
