Sophia Kato, Co-President
Hello,
My name is Sophia. I am a junior at Maui High School and a past participant in Maui Math Circle. As a fifth grader, I was part of my school’s Math Matters team. In intermediate school, I joined Math Counts, eventually placing 3rd at the chapter level in seventh grade and qualifying for state competition. As a past student in and current tutor for the Maui Waena Intermediate School Math Counts program, I have observed the importance of entering middle school with a strong foundation in the topics that will be discussed in the five MMC sessions that will be necessary for both the core math curriculum and further understanding of more advanced topics as students progress into high school. I am now the president of the Math League Club and president of Science Club at Maui High. My hope is that by participating in MMC, students will be excited to learn and practice their math skills, but also interact with their peers over similar interests in STEM topics. I met some of my closest friends today through math circle, and I am grateful that I was exposed to applied math before entering 6th grade. Being able to draw connections between science and math is a fundamental learning target in this program; one that will hopefully foster interest in STEM-related fields of study. This is our first year reinstating Maui Math Circle. As co-president, I look forward to organizing and coordinating this year's program.

Joshua Mori, Co-President
Aloha,
I am Joshua Mori, currently a junior at Maui High School. Throughout my early education at Lihikai Elementary school, I tended to have an inclination towards the sciences and finding ways to apply my knowledge competitively, largely influenced by robotics. During middle school, I competed nationally in film competitions and dedicated myself to HOSA. However, as I transitioned into high school, I pivoted towards establishing myself with fulfilling research opportunities while challenging myself with leadership positions. Currently, I am the Vice-President of Key Club, Co-Director for the Maui Waena HOSA Chapter, Treasurer for Science Club, and Executive Treasurer for the MHS Student Government. Throughout my experience over the years in these programs, the common denominator was always STEM. The skills and relationships I formed through working in a constructive team with an accepting and encouraging environment has been invaluable in shaping my character. Despite not being a previous participant of this program myself, I truly do hope to recreate a similar environment that positively influenced my development – all the while learning! As Co-President, I am grateful I have this special opportunity to support the community.
