About Maui Math Circle
Maui Math Circle is a student-run community service program offering third, fourth and fifth graders in Maui County schools the opportunity to study advanced math concepts and problem-solving skills with middle and high school student mentors. The program aims to constructively expose younger students to STEM education as a means of stimulating their interest in engineering and other mathematics-related fields. The program consists of six monthly sessions at Pomaika'i Elementary School during the school year.
As an active former middle school participant in numerous local math competitions, including MathCounts and the American Mathematics Competition, MMC program founder Jasmine Doan discovered an enduring passion for mathematics. The experience of learning to solve challenging problems further served to develop her sense of focus and self-confidence. Upon discovering the relative lack of Maui County resources dedicated to helping young students excel at mathematics, Jasmine was inspired to initiate this service project with the ultimate goal of instilling a passion for math among the island's youth.
